The basis of Intelligent Aid is simple. We ask you to answer a topical question in 500 words. We want you to demonstrate your intelligence, your ability to structure convincing arguments and your appreciation of practicalities.
40 shortlisted finalists will be invited to a Finals day at our offices in Canary Wharf, London. The 20 students who stand out at the Final will be offered a place on our vacation scheme.
One overall winner will receive £5,000 towards their university fees. They’ll also be asked to choose a charity from our approved list to receive a £1,000 donation.
We’ve been running this award-winning scheme since 2010 and it gets bigger and better every time. This year, as always, the question is highly topical. We are inviting you to consider the kind of issues that are exercising our minds every day.
This year, it is all about the Growth Economies
These economies present exciting business opportunities. They’re also changing the face – and dictating the pace – of globalisation. Within the last decade, the aggregate GDP of the BRIC economies – namely Brazil, Russia, India and China – has quadrupled from around US$3 trillion to $12 trillion. More than a dozen African countries have also expanded by more than 6% a year for six or more years.
Clifford Chance is at the forefront of these developments and a recognised leader in these markets. We are the IFLR Asia 2013 International Law Firm of the Year, the Chambers Asia Pacific Awards 2013 China and China: M&A Law Firm of the Year, and the Chambers Europe Awards 2013 Russia Law Firm of the Year. The firm also has long established groups focusing on Africa and on India. A Clifford Chance São Paulo-led team recently received an award from The American Lawyer for advising TAM S.A. on its combination with LAN Airlines to form LATAM Airlines.
The Competition Question
Economic growth in markets like China, Africa, Russia and Latin America continues to present new opportunities. How should leading international law firms be adapting their strategies in light of this growth? You can base your answer on specific geographies and sectors.
Please give us your answer in 500 words.
You can submit your answer after 4th November 2013 and before the final deadline of 31st January 2014.
If you’re one of the top 40 entrants, we’ll invite you to the Intelligent Aid Final Day on 5th March 2014. We’ll let you know if you’ve been successful by 19th February 2014. In the Final, you’ll join a team of other finalists to tackle a challenging case study relating to Growth Economies. It’s a further opportunity for you to impress us with your innovative thinking and persuasive arguments. You’ll present your solutions to a judging panel of partners and external experts. On the day, they’ll select the 20 students who will join the vacation scheme and the overall winner.
